Courtyard By Marriott

Attached by an enclosed walkway to the Horizon Convention Center is Muncie’s 150-Room Courtyard by Marriott. This unique property opened in December of 2015 to accommodate convention, wedding, corporate meeting and other guests of the Horizon Convention Center.   Additionally, this hotel has a very special purpose.

In partnership with The State of Indiana, The City of Muncie, The Horizon Convention Center, The Marriott Corporation, General Hotels Corporation, Schmidt Associates, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Ivy Tech and Ball State University, The Arc of Indiana built the Courtyard to serve as a training institute for persons with disabilities

Housed within the hotel is the Erskine Green Training Institute – a post-secondary hospitality training school. The Arc of Indiana, a statewide advocacy organization for people with disabilities, developed this unique hotel in an effort to address the 82% unemployment rate among people with disabilities and to improve quality of life for all people with disabilities.

The Project & Its Purpose

  • The project’s primary goal is to provide post-secondary education opportunities that will successfully train individuals with disabilities in the hospitality industry resulting in their employment.
  • The Erskine Green Training Institute and Courtyard by Marriott at Horizon Convention Center trains and employs individuals with disabilities throughout the hotel in various capacities including management.
  • The Courtyard by Marriott at Horizon Convention Center features original artwork created by individuals with disabilities and opportunities to sponsor the artwork.
  • The Courtyard by Marriott at Horizon Convention Center operates for profit and those profits are used to support The Erskine Green Training Institute and other initiatives of The Arc of Indiana.
  • The project created approximately 30 permanent jobs in various capacities within the hotel for individuals with disabilities.
